BOTTOM LINE: The Herbalife diet is pricey and involves highly processed shakes and many supplements, some of which have been linked to negative health effects. Short-term use likely causes weight loss, but long-term effectiveness is yet to be studied.

Herbalife Nutrition Ltd., also called Herbalife International, Inc. (with a U.S. subsidiary called Herbalife International of America) or simply Herbalife, is a global multi-level marketing (MLM) corporation that develops and sells dietary supplements. The company was founded by Mark R. Hughes in 1980, and it employs an estimated 9,900 people worldwide. The business is incorporated in the Cayman Islands, with its corporate headquarters located in Los Angeles, California. The company operates in 95 countries through a network of approximately 4.5 million independent distributors and members. In October 2022, previous CEO Michael O. Johnson was appointed as Chairman and interim Chief Executive Officer following the departure of John Agwunobi.
In January 2009, the Scientific Committee of the Spanish Agency for Food Safety and Nutrition (AESAN) reached the same conclusion. After reviewing cases implicating Herbalife products in Spain, Switzerland, Israel, Finland, France, Italy, Iceland and Portugal, the 12-member scientific panel issued a report concluding: "The analyses of these cases and information regarding their circumstances have not allowed us to establish a causal relationship" between liver anomalies and Herbalife's dietary supplements. The panel attributed the cases to metabolic changes from overzealous and unsupervised dieting. However, neither a 2005 American Association for the Study of the Liver position paper on the management of acute liver failure nor a 2013 review in the New England Journal of Medicine lists "overzealous dieting" among the recognized causes of acute liver failure.
Our product today is one of the best meal replacements there is out there. We want to shift people from a fat, salt, and sugar diet to a healthy diet of proteins and carbohydrates and branch chain amino acids, and I could get going with all of the molecular structure of nutrition, but I'm going to spare you that discussion right now. But we have to get more in tune with what's going on out there in the sleep horizon and the anxiety horizon. How can we, as a company, better address the needs of consumers across the platform? As I said in my little opening there that we started out as a weight loss company.
According to the survey findings, 39% of respondents have made a major change to their diet this year, with the highest number to have done so in Indonesia, Vietnam and Philippines. Among the top motivators for changing their diet include:
Diving deeper into the dietary changes, 49% of consumers who have made changes to their diet started eating more fruits and vegetables, 46% ate less meat, while 39% chose to eat more plant-based foods.
However, 58% said that while they would like to incorporate more plant-based proteins into their diet, they were not sure of how to begin doing so. This sentiment was particularly strong among consumers in Vietnam, Philippines and Indonesia.
When it comes to the impact of the dietary changes, a large majority of consumers - 83% - have noticed a positive difference in their health. In addition, 68% believed that their dietary changes this year have lasted longer compared to a different time. As a result, 82% plan to keep the dietary changes for the foreseeable future.
Herbalife Nutrition identified that one of the changes people were making was to their diet and wanted to understand both the drivers of change and the granular details of the changes that were being made.
Across the world, 41% of people made a change to their diet with 83% of those noting that there was a specific moment of realization that a change in diet was required. Health benefits and weight loss goals topped the drivers of that change with a further 22% identifying the need to move towards a more cost-effective diet.
Unsurprisingly, of those that changed their diet, cutting down on sweets and snacks were key changes made with 43% making the decision to eat less meat and more still focusing on their fruit and vegetable intake.
While 46% of respondents stated that they were more open to a plant-based diet, 25% of people did not agree that people would be eating a mostly plant-based diet in the foreseeable future. Explained in part by the discovery that 70% of vegans and vegetarians had found themselves craving meat and 38% of vegans and vegetarians openly admitting having eaten animal-based products.
Remarkably, 82% of respondents felt their health had improved following the change of diet and due to changes in working practices, 84% felt they had the time, space and motivation to keep to the changes they had made.

Herbalife is weight management and nutritional supplement manufacturer that markets herbal and dietary supplements (HDS) for a wide range of conditions, including weight loss, digestive health, heart health, personal care, energy and fitness, general health, wellbeing, and boosting of energy and immunity. There have been many reports of acute, clinically apparent liver injury in persons taking Herbalife products, but the link to the HDS product has often been controversial. The specific ingredients in the various Herbalife products that might cause liver injury have not been identified.
A 37 year old woman developed nausea, epigastric pain and jaundice approximately 2 months after starting several Herbalife dietary supplements for weight loss. The supplements mentioned included Formula One Shake Mix, [Formula Two] Multivitamin Complex, [Formula Three] Cell Activator, Cell-U-loss, Herbal Concentrate Original and Total Control Formula. She had no previous history of liver disease and denied alcohol and drug abuse. On presentation one month after onset of symptoms, she was jaundiced, but had no fever, rash or signs of chronic liver disease. Laboratory tests showed marked elevations in ALT (2068 U/L) and AST (2199 U/L) with minimal increase in alkaline phosphatase (185 U/L) and a total bilirubin of 15.3 mg/dL. She was admitted for evaluation. Tests for hepatitis A, B, C, E, EBV and cytomegalovirus were negative as were routine autoantibodies. Immunoglobulin levels were normal. An abdominal CT scan showed no evidence of biliary obstruction. A liver biopsy showed an acute hepatocellular injury with bridging fibrosis. Once the supplements were stopped, she improved slowly and was discharged one week later without evidence of worsening liver disease, hepatic encephalopathy or hypoglycemia (Table). Subsequently, her symptoms resolved and laboratory tests had returned to normal or near normal levels when she was seen two months later.
A case of drug induced liver injury in a woman in a weight loss program using multiple Herbalife products. No other possible cause of liver injury was identified. The agent responsible in the numerous dietary supplements that she was taking could not be identified. The injury was distinctly hepatocellular and viral-hepatitis like and resembled the typical injury associated with green tea. She worsened for the first week after stopping the nutritional supplements but improved thereafter, and all tests were normal or near normal two months later.
